Project Description:

Tori: A Floating Tea Stall Inspired by the Boats of Tazumuddin Ghat Situated in the flood-prone region of Tazumuddin Ghat, Bhola, Tori is an architectural tea stall that embodies the spirit of the local fishermen and their deep connection to the river. Inspired by the traditional boats that define the landscape, the stall seamlessly merges with its surroundings, serving as a cultural and social hub for travelers, fishermen, and locals. Concept & Design The structure mimics the shape of the boats used in the region, reflecting the identity of the f ishing community. Built on floating drums, the tea stall is designed to rise with floodwaters, ensuring functionality even in extreme conditions. Its lightweight nature makes it easily shiftable, providing flexibility in changing environments. Sustainability & Materials Constructed with bamboo, a readily available and sustainable material, Tori ensures a ordability and environmental harmony. The facade is crafted from date tree leaves, a local resource that enhances natural cooling and ventilation. This cost-e ective approach supports traditional craftsmanship while maintaining resilience against the elements. Special Features Floating Foundation: Drums act as the plinth, allowing the structure to float during f loods, ensuring accessibility year-round. Rainwater Harvesting System: A built-in system collects and stores rainwater, reducing dependency on external sources and making water available for tea preparation and cleaning. Lightweight & Easily Shiftable: The use of bamboo and lightweight materials allows for easy disassembly and relocation, making it adaptable to changing flood levels or shifting needs of the community. Cultural Representation: The design reflects the local boat-making tradition, creating a sense of belonging for the fishermen and boatmen who frequent the stall. Cost-E ective & Sustainable: The use of local materials like bamboo, date palm leaves, and repurposed drums makes the construction budget-friendly while ensuring longevity. Natural Cooling & Ventilation: The open, breathable structure, combined with the use of organic materials, keeps the interior comfortable without the need for artificial cooling. Social & Functional Hub: Positioned near the launch terminal, Tori becomes a key gathering space where passengers, fishermen, and locals meet to enjoy tea, engage in conversations, and strengthen community ties. By blending innovation with tradition, Tori is more than a tea stall—it is a symbol of resilience, sustainability, and cultural identity in Bhola’s ever-changing waterscape.
