Project Description
Concept : Tea Stall as an Urban Intervention: A Protest Against Robbery in Mohammadpur
Context & Urban Challenge
Dhaka is experiencing a surge in robberies, with Mohammadpur being one of the worst-affected areas. The row housing estate layout creates numerous dark, unmonitored connecting roads, making them prime targets for criminal activity. Areas like Nurjahan and Razia Sultana are particularly vulnerable, with frequent incidents even during daylight hours due to low foot traffic.
This project aims to address these urban vulnerabilities by transforming "dead zones" into active, safe, and socially engaging spaces. By strategically placing tea stalls as micro-community hubs in high-risk areas, we can introduce light, movement, and social presence—three key deterrents to crime.
Architectural Approach & Design Philosophy
Recognizing the social responsibility of architecture, I envisioned this project as more than just a commercial space—it is an urban intervention, a symbol of resilience, and a protest against fear.
Site Selection - Reclaiming Unsafe Spaces
Located in crime-prone alleyways and unlit intersections, transforming them into safe gathering points.
Introducing constant activity and natural surveillance, reducing opportunities for crime.
Form & Materiality - A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity
Inspired by the folds of tea leaves, translated into sharp, modern architectural lines that symbolize resilience.
Materials: Locally sourced wood, ensuring sustainability, accessibility, and warmth in design.
Spatial Organization - Functionality Meets Social Interaction Separate zones for efficiency:
Dedicated wash area, cooking space, food display, and storage for hygiene and workflow clarity.
Free-flow architectural plan to encourage interaction and movement, breaking psychological barriers of isolation and fear.
Natural Comfort & Safety - Light, Ventilation & Visibility
Strategic lighting design to eliminate dark corners, enhancing safety.
Passive ventilation techniques to ensure a comfortable, energy-efficient environment.
Transparent facades & open seating to foster inclusivity and a sense of collective ownership.
5. Social Impact - A Hub for Community Engagement & Awareness
Designed as a meeting place where people can interact, report incidents, and discuss local issues.
A visible, community-driven response to crime, empowering residents to reclaim their public spaces.
Vision & Impact
This pilot project is not just about serving tea—it is about reinstating a sense of security, rebuilding community ties, and reshaping urban behavior. If we can reduce the robbery rate by even 1%, this model can be expanded across Mohammadpur, proving that architecture can be an active force for social change.
