Project Description

Re-Tong is a community-centric space inspired by traditional Bengali tea stalls, or "Tongs," where people gather to gossip, share news, and enjoy a warm cup of tea. The name combines “Re,” meaning recycled materials, with “Tong,” symbolizing connection and community.

Made from recycled plastic, Re-Tong is a sustainable initiative that promotes waste management and provides an eco-friendly environment at a low cost.

Re-Tong consists of 10 modular units, each measuring 6'x2'x7'6". Eight modules serve as seating, while two function as counters for tea and juice. The units can be arranged in various configurations to fit different spaces. When fully expanded, it stretches to 60 feet. In its folded state, it becomes a compact unit (20'x6'x7'6"), with 8' of free space. Four seating modules include 9 seats for the public, with small shelves underneath that can be used as animal shelters at night. At the end of the day, the Tong Mama can rest inside, tucked away like a cozy burrito in the folded stall.

The design features Jaali patterns on the walls and Nakshi Kantha embroidery on the counters, reflecting Bengali art. Re-Tong is more than just a tea stall; it’s a vibrant space for all ages to relax, connect, and enjoy a peaceful moment surrounded by warmth, tea, and culture.

Our seating modules, made entirely from recycled plastic, have a total volume of 25 cubic feet. With each cubic foot using 25 kg of plastic, a single module helps remove 625 kg of plastic waste from the environment!
