Project Description

The name of the tea stall 'Cha-tai Ghor' came from the element chatai which is a type of bamboo mat and a key element in our design process. The central idea of this design is based on two Key principles- one, inclusivity of the local community by incorporating locally sourced material in the design process as well as introducing local tradition and heritage to a wider audience through a proper platform. The Santal community in Dinajpur is an old community here, yet they lack a proper platform to share their culture and traditions with others. Since a tea stall is a place where people of all cast and creeds gather together, what better place could there be to showcase their rich cultural heritage? The design includes a staging area where the traditional Santal dance can be performed and traditional Santali music and musical instruments like Sarpa, Buan flute, Sarenga, Banam etc. could be displayed. The second part of the design idea came directly from the central element 'tea' itself. Just as the same tea leaf undergoes different types of production processes to get different outcomes tailored to suit individual tastes, the spaces are also divided into layers, offering a variety of environments for different needs. There are spaces for people who wish to enjoy their tea in solitude as well as spaces for groups to gather, making the place truly inclusive. The tea stall has the capacity to serve 35-45 people at the same time.
